DAY TWO

Someone said that this looks like a  face under water. This early stage of the sculpture illustrates the uncovering process that I use in defining the form. The tool marks that are deep parallel grooves are made by the point chisel, subia, seen here. It is called the mason's stroke and it is used by carvers in dressing stone and shaping for architectural purposes. The finer cross hatched marks are made by the tooth chisel, or gradina, going around the form.

There is a wonderful unlimited potentiality to the marble at this point.
